Bell Mountain is a desert peak in San Bernardino County, near Victorville, CA, about 5 miles off the old road. It rises to 3,897 feet in Sidewinder Valley, to the north of the town of Apple Valley. The mountain is easy to recognize thanks to its bell-like profile, which fits its name. For Route 66 travellers near Victorville, it is a distinctive landmark on the desert skyline.
What is Bell Mountain?
The mountain is made of sediments laid down in an ancient sea and later topped by volcanic rock carried from distant sources. That hard cap shielded the softer layers below from erosion, producing the bell shape. The Bell Mountain Wash, a dry stream, runs north of it toward the Mojave River.
