University of New Mexico Arboretum

UNM's arboretum in Albuquerque, NM, is not a single garden but the whole university campus, planted with about 235 species of trees, shrubs and other woody plants. It holds national accreditation as an arboretum, and the Arbor Day Foundation names UNM a Tree Campus. It lies just off Central Avenue, the old Route 66, and makes a pleasant green walk between museum visits.

What is University of New Mexico Arboretum?

Rather than sitting in one fenced garden, this arboretum spreads across the grounds of the university. Trees and shrubs line the paths between buildings, and the variety adds up to some 235 species of trees, shrubs and other woody plants. The collection is nationally accredited, and the campus also carries Tree Campus recognition in higher education from the Arbor Day Foundation.

For anyone who has spent days on open highway, the shade and greenery make a welcome break.

Visiting University of New Mexico Arboretum: tips

There is parking, there are restrooms on site, and the grounds are listed as wheelchair accessible. Plan on a relaxed walk of half an hour or more. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and the UNM Art Museum are each about 0.2 miles away, and the Lobo Theater about 0.7 miles, so the arboretum links the campus stops together nicely.
