Bridge No. 18, in Sapulpa, OK, is an early highway bridge built between 1921 and 1924 that became part of US 66 as soon as the highway was created in 1926. Also called the Rock Creek Bridge, it joined the National Register in 1995. Today it is the main feature of a park themed on Route 66, making it an easy and photogenic stop on the way through Creek County.

What is Bridge No. 18 at Rock Creek?

This is a road bridge over Rock Creek in Sapulpa, in Creek County. Its official name is Bridge No. 18, many people call it the Rock Creek Bridge, and some records add the name of the park that has grown up around it.

The park gives the old span a proper setting. Instead of being just another crossing, it has become the main feature of a small public space built around the Route 66 story, a place where travelers can pull over, look at an original piece of the road and take pictures.

History of Bridge No. 18 at Rock Creek

Crews built the bridge sometime between 1921 and 1924, before the federal highway system numbered its routes. When US 66 was designated in 1926, this crossing was folded into it almost at once, so it carried Route 66 traffic from the very beginning.

The National Register added the bridge on February 23, 1995. It qualified on two grounds: its role in historic events, meaning the development of the highway, and its architecture and engineering.
