Woodward Park, in Tulsa, OK, is a 45-acre public park that doubles as a botanical garden and arboretum. It is best known for its spring azaleas and for the Tulsa Rose Garden, with more than 9,000 roses in over 250 varieties. Founded in 1929 and listed on the National Register in 2014, it lies about 2 miles off the old road and makes a calm, green break from driving.
What is Woodward Park?
The park was laid out to show visitors many kinds of plants in one place. It holds a set of themed areas: a rose garden, an arboretum, the Tulsa Garden Center, collections of cacti and tropical plants, and beds of spring flowers.
Spring is its showiest season. Azaleas are the headline, backed by redbuds, dogwoods, irises and tulips. The rose garden adds color later in the year, with thousands of bushes arranged by variety, so a visit in almost any warm month finds something in bloom.
History of Woodward Park
The land belonged to Helen Woodward, and the park carries her name. It opened in 1929, after a long court fight over who owned the property. The rose garden followed in 1935.
On March 11, 2014, the grounds joined the National Register as a historic district, under the name Woodward Park and Gardens. The listing recognizes the site for its landscape design, its architecture and its role in education and recreation.
