Downtown Webb City Historic District, Missouri

Downtown Webb City Historic District covers the old business center of Webb City, MO, less than a mile off the old road. Its 43 historic buildings went up over roughly 80 years, from about 1883 to 1965, so the storefronts range from Victorian Italianate to sleek Streamline Moderne. With several old theaters, banks and a former opera house, it paints a clear picture of a small-town main street through the decades.

What is Downtown Webb City Historic District?

Italianate, Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival buildings stand here beside later Art Deco and Streamline Moderne fronts. The Middle West Hotel, a former opera house, was listed on its own before the district was drawn. Other names to look for from around 1890 are the National Bank, the Newland Hotel, and the Royal Furniture Co. and Morris Opera House building.

History of Downtown Webb City Historic District

The early 1900s added more: the Aylor Building, once an Odd Fellow Hall, around 1905; the Unity Building with the Merchant and Miners Bank around 1906; the S. Morris Department Store and the Wagner Building, a former post office, around 1907; the Mystic Theater around 1914; a newer post office around 1916; and two more theaters, the Dickenson around 1928 and the Civic around 1931. The district joined the National Register in 2014.

Visiting Downtown Webb City Historic District: tips

Park once and walk; a loop takes about half an hour, and the buildings are best seen from the sidewalk. The Middle West Hotel and the Elijah Thomas Webb Residence are each about 0.1 mile away. Casey's General Store, about 0.3 mile off, is handy for fuel.
