Carthage South Historic District, Missouri

The Carthage South Historic District covers a large neighborhood in Carthage, MO, just off the Route 66 corridor, with 491 historic buildings. Most went up between about 1875 and 1925; the streets show a mix of Late Victorian houses and Craftsman bungalows. Churches, the town library and the old high school are among its landmarks. Listed on the National Register in 1982, it makes a rewarding slow drive or walk.

What is Carthage South Historic District?

This is mainly a residential area, so the heart of it is street after street of older homes. Late Victorian houses stand alongside bungalows and Craftsman homes, so a single block can span several decades of building.

Mixed in are public buildings worth seeking out. St. Ann's Catholic Church dates to 1908 and First Christian Church to 1909. First United Methodist Church went up in 1925. Two buildings began as Presbyterian churches: the former Westminster Presbyterian, built before 1888, and the former Cumberland Presbyterian, from 1892. Carthage Senior High School and the Carthage Public Library both date to 1904.
