Dr. Charles Compton House

This Tudor Revival home, the Dr. Charles Compton House, stands in Springfield's Oak Knolls area, in Springfield, IL, about 1.5 miles off the old road. Built in 1926 for a local surgeon, it was designed by the Springfield firm Helmle and Helmle. It is a private home, so enjoy its storybook front from the street. It joined the National Register in 2017.

What is Dr. Charles Compton House?

The front is a patchwork of textures. The entry has its own small roof and stands next to a stone tower topped with a parapet. On each side of the door a gable juts forward: one is stucco with windows trimmed in brick, the other pairs a brick ground floor with half-timbered stucco above. The slate roof is original, and two brick chimneys rise from it.

History of Dr. Charles Compton House

Dr. Charles Wentworth Compton, a surgeon who also started a local political club called the Wentworth Republicans, had the house built in 1926. Helmle and Helmle designed many homes in Oak Knolls, and this is one of them. It joined the National Register in 2017.
