John L. Lewis House

The John L. Lewis House in Springfield, IL, was home to a labor leader known across the country. Lewis lived here from 1917 to 1965, the decades when he ran the coal miners' union and launched the CIO. The house sits about 1.5 miles off the old road, a few blocks from Washington Park, and suits travelers who like stories of work, mines and industry.

What is John L. Lewis House?

This is a private residence valued for the person who lived in it rather than for its architecture. Lewis kept it as his home for nearly half a century, through the busiest and most influential stretch of his working life, and that link earned it a place on the National Register in 1979.

History of John L. Lewis House

Born in 1880, Lewis went to work in the coal mines at 15 and was soon active in the union. In 1920, three years after settling in this house, he became president of the miners' union, the United Mine Workers, and grew into a national figure. In 1935 he started the Congress of Industrial Organizations and served as its first president, backing organizing beyond coal and helping lead strikes in steel and car making. He stepped down from the miners' union in 1960 and died in 1969.
