Frontier Restaurant

Frontier Restaurant is a New Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque, NM, close to the University of New Mexico's main campus. Opened in 1971 on Central Avenue, the city's stretch of Route 66, it grew into one of Albuquerque's most popular places to eat, serving about 4,000 people a day by 2000. Its walls carry Western art, including portraits of John Wayne, a nod to the Duke City nickname.

What is Frontier Restaurant?

This is a large restaurant serving New Mexican food. It spreads across five dining rooms that together cover about 8,000 square feet, and the rooms are decorated with more than 100 pieces of Western-themed art. Several of those are portraits of John Wayne. The choice is a joke with local roots: Wayne was nicknamed The Duke, and Albuquerque is known as the Duke City.

Visiting Frontier Restaurant: tips

The restaurant sits right on the Route 66 corridor through Albuquerque, so it is an easy lunch or dinner stop on a day in the city. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. The Pig & Calf Lunch, a 1930s Moderne building on the National Register, is about 0.2 mile away, as is the University of New Mexico Art Museum, and the university's arboretum is about 0.4 mile away.
