La Cita is a Mexican and New Mexican restaurant in Tucumcari, NM, on the corner of 1st Street and Tucumcari Boulevard, the old Route 66. Its story goes back to 1940, and it has been in its present building since 1961. Travelers know it by the huge painted sombrero over the entrance and the revolving neon sombrero sign out by the street.
What is La Cita?
The present building dates from about 1960–61. A painted stucco sombrero, roughly 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide, sits over the front entrance, and its crown has been repainted in different colors over the years. By the road, a neon sign shaped like a sombrero turns and glows after dark.
History of La Cita
La Cita dates to 1940. It moved to the present site in 1961, and New Mexico's Route 66 neon sign program helped restore its sign in the early 2000s.
The restaurant closed in 2004, then reopened under new operators by about 2006. In 2024 it won a $50,000 Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express for exterior repairs.
Visiting La Cita: tips
