Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico
Tucumcari is the first big stop in New Mexico for westbound travelers, about 1,323 miles from Chicago and some 130 miles west of Amarillo. For decades billboards along the highway told drivers to spend the night here, and the town still has more classic motor courts and neon signs than almost anywhere else on the road. The stops we group here are in and around town, plus the mesa that gave it its name.

The most famous is the Blue Swallow Motel, a 1940s motor court with a garage beside each room and a neon swallow sign that shows up in countless Route 66 photos. Not every motel survived: the Cactus Motor Lodge, built in 1941, has been torn down, and its old sign now stands in Albuquerque. Downtown, the Art Deco Odeon Theatre is a movie house listed on the National Register, and the old Tucumcari station recalls the railroad that founded the town.
Tucumcari also has a set of buildings from the New Deal years. The Arch Hurley Conservancy District Office Building is a 1940 Pueblo Revival office with log posts on its porch, and the Metropolitan Park Bathhouse and Pool is a Pueblo Revival bathhouse in a park south of town. Tucumcari Mountain, the flat-topped mesa beside town, was a landmark for travelers long before the highway.
Practical note: Tucumcari is a main overnight town on our planner. Arrive before dark to see the neon come on along the old main street, and book the famous motels ahead in summer. Santa Rosa is about 70 miles farther west.
