Huning Highlands Conoco Service Station

This Conoco station in Albuquerque, NM, has stood in the Huning Highlands neighborhood since 1937. The Continental Oil Company built it to look like a small cottage, with white glazed brick walls, green trim and a steep gabled roof topped by a chimney. It sold fuel until about 1983 and joined the state and National Registers in 2006. Today a local preservation group uses it as its headquarters.

What is Huning Highlands Conoco Service Station?

The cottage look was a popular choice for gas stations of the day. Here the office sits on the west side under a side-facing gable, joined to two garage bays whose gables face the street and whose wooden doors roll up. The easternmost bay was added around 1939.

The forecourt keeps its concrete pump islands, a light pole from around the 1960s and a steel sign post. The pumps, tanks and signs themselves are gone, but the shape of a small neighborhood filling station is still easy to read.

History of Huning Highlands Conoco Service Station

Conoco ran the station from 1937 until 1961. Horn Oil Company took over and kept it going until about 1983. The empty building was then leased in 1992 by the Albuquerque Conservation Association, known as TACA, which uses it as a base for preservation workshops and its other activities. In 2006 it earned listings on the National Register and on New Mexico's state register of cultural properties, recognized as a well-kept example of the car-centered growth that shaped Albuquerque in the mid-20th century.

Visiting Huning Highlands Conoco Service Station: tips

The station is a short detour from Central Avenue, the old Route 66. It is an office, so view it from the street; the glazed brick and the roll-up garage doors make a good photo, and a few minutes is plenty. The New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum is about 0.5 miles away, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology about a mile, and the University of New Mexico Arboretum about 1.1 miles.
