Miller Park (Bloomington, Illinois), Illinois

Miller Park is a large public park in the southwest part of Bloomington, IL, about 0.2 miles from the old Route 66 corridor. It packs a lot into one block: a man-made lake, a zoo, a pavilion, two war memorials and an old steam locomotive with a caboose. Restrooms are on site, which makes it one of the easiest places in town for a family break from the road.

What is Miller Park?

The park fills a big block bounded by Wood Street to the north and Morris Avenue to the west. Beyond the lake and the pavilion, there are softball fields, sand volleyball courts, a mini golf course and a playground. Miller Park Zoo sits inside the park.

Rail fans will want to see the steam locomotive, its tender and a Nickel Plate Road caboose, a reminder of the railroad that once served this area. The park also holds two war memorials. In warm summer weather an outdoor theater stages shows for local audiences, and on the Fourth of July fireworks go up over the lake.

Visiting Miller Park: tips

Allow half an hour for a stroll, or longer if you add the zoo, which is only about 0.1 miles away. Restrooms are on site and a meal is available nearby. The McLean County Museum of History is about 1 mile away, and the East Grove Street District is about 1.1 miles off.
