This state-run fish and wildlife area near Joliet, IL, named for Mazonia and Braidwood, protects about 1,017 acres in Grundy County. It was set aside in 1981 and lies less than a mile off the old Route 66 corridor. For drivers heading south out of the Chicago area, it offers a change of pace from towns and roadside signs: open state land kept for fish and wildlife rather than for sightseeing.
What it is
The area is classed as an Illinois state park and a protected area. Its name joins two local place names, Mazonia and Braidwood. Records say little more, so expect a plain outdoor stop rather than a developed attraction.
Visiting tips
Plan it as a short detour of less than a mile from the old road. It pairs naturally with Tracy, a vanished coal-mining settlement about 2.7 miles away. Wilmington's Eagle Hotel and Small–Towle House are roughly 10 miles off.
