Mound 34

Mound 34, a small platform mound, sits at Cahokia Mounds near St. Louis, MO, about 5 miles off the old road on the Illinois side of the river near Collinsville. It looks modest, but digs beside it uncovered traces of a copper workshop, the only one yet found at any Mississippian culture site. It is a quick add-on for Route 66 travellers already visiting Cahokia.

What is Mound 34?

The mound stands about 1,300 feet east of Monks Mound. Archaeologist Gregory Perino first came upon the workshop in the late 1950s, but the find was then lost for some 60 years. Excavations from 2002 to 2010 located it again.
