Rio Grande Nature Center State Park

The Rio Grande Nature Center, a state park, sits beside the river in Albuquerque, NM. Set up in 1982, it protects 38 acres as an urban wildlife preserve, with ponds, gardens and viewing areas for watching birds. It is about 3 miles off the old road, a calm break for Route 66 travellers who have spent the morning in the car or in city museums.

What is Rio Grande Nature Center State Park?

A small state park built around wildlife rather than recreation. Roughly two thirds of the land is set aside purely as habitat, left for birds and other animals. The rest holds a visitor center, two gardens, several spots for watching wildlife, an education building and the home of Wildlife Rescue, Inc., a non-profit wildlife rescue group.

Four ponds were built on the grounds. They give birds and other animals a place to live and recreate the kind of wetlands that once spread across the Rio Grande's natural flood plain. For a traveller, that means a chance to see water birds and wetland life in the middle of a desert city.

History of Rio Grande Nature Center State Park

The preserve was established in 1982 and is now part of the New Mexico state park system. It shows how a slice of river habitat can survive inside a growing city, only a short drive from busy streets and shopping centers. Its education building reflects that purpose: the park is as much about teaching visitors, including school groups, as about protecting the land.

Visiting Rio Grande Nature Center State Park: tips

Allow an hour or two for a walk and some time at the ponds; binoculars help. The park has parking, restrooms and wheelchair access, and it is a good stop for children. Bring water and a hat for the outdoor paths.

If you want to add a museum, the Albuquerque Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science are both about 2.4 miles away near Old Town, so the park fits neatly into a day of city sightseeing.
