Rod's Steak House

Rod's Steak House is a steakhouse on Route 66 in Williams, AZ. Rod Graves, a cattleman, started it with his wife Helen in 1946, and it kept serving travelers after Interstate 40 bypassed Williams in 1984. Its trademark is the neon steer sign above the entrance, nicknamed Domino. After closing during the COVID-19 pandemic and sitting empty for years, it was remodeled by new owners and reopened in August 2025 with its old look kept.

What is Rod's Steak House?

A steakhouse in downtown Williams, right on the old road. The neon sign over the door is a steer lettered with the restaurant's name. The cattle theme runs inside too: menus have long come cut in the shape of a cow, Graves's "MJ" cattle brand appears as a decorative mark, and steaks still come off a kitchen grill that dates from the 1940s.

History of Rod's Steak House

Rod Graves, who owned a ranch near Williams, opened Rod's on August 23, 1946. Lawrence Sanchez began there as a young dishwasher, worked his way up, and around 1985 took over with his wife Stella; they ran it for decades.

After the pandemic closure, Kennelly Concepts bought it, remodeled the dining room and exterior while keeping the old look, and reopened it on August 23, 2025, 79 years to the day after the first opening. Sanchez came to the ribbon-cutting.

Visiting Rod's Steak House: tips

Rod's is on Route 66 itself in downtown Williams, so it takes no detour. The neon steer is the photo to take, best after dark when the sign is lit.
