Sid's Diner

Sid's Diner is a fried onion burger grill in El Reno, OK, on the corner of Wade Street and Choctaw Avenue, where Route 66 made its turn through downtown. Marty Hall started it, named it after his father, Sid, and ran it from about 1989; his son Adam now owns it. It is one of three onion-burger grills a few blocks apart downtown, which makes El Reno a natural lunch stop on the old road across Oklahoma.

What is Sid's Diner?

The draw is the Oklahoma-style fried onion burger, with thin-sliced onions pressed into the patty on the griddle. The diner sits on the southwest corner of Wade Street and Choctaw Avenue. Every Route 66 alignment through downtown El Reno came west along Wade and turned north on Choctaw toward Sunset Drive.

History of Sid's Diner

Marty Hall learned to make onion burgers as a teenager at Johnnie's Grill. Sid's dates from about 1989 and stands right on the old route.

Burger writer George Motz has championed it, and in spring 2023 it was a filming location for a burger video series with Motz and chef Alvin Cailan.

Visiting Sid's Diner: tips

Treat it as a meal stop. The big Route 66 shield monument, designed for the city in 2018, stands near the diner, so the photo is a few steps away. Johnnie's Grill and Robert's Grill are a few blocks away. On the first Saturday of May, El Reno's Fried Onion Burger Day festival cooks a giant onion burger of about 750 pounds downtown.
