Rising three stories in the Classical Revival style, the Southern Hotel was built in El Reno, OK, in 1909 to lodge railroad and interurban passengers. In its early days it ranked among the most lavish hotels in Oklahoma. Restored in the 1980s, it now holds apartments, small offices and a senior center, and it stands a short walk from the old road through town.
What is Southern Hotel?
The hotel served passengers on the Rock Island Railroad and riders on the Oklahoma City interurban line. When rail passenger service through El Reno ended in 1967, the building slipped into neglect and changed owners several times, though it stayed structurally sound. It was listed on the National Register in 1978.
