Avant's Cities Service Station

Avant's Cities Service Station, a small Art Deco gas station in El Reno, OK, went up in 1933 to sell fuel to drivers on U.S. Route 66. It stands right beside the old road, a few steps from two more historic buildings, which makes downtown El Reno an easy place to park once and look around. The station has been on the National Register since 2004.

What is Avant's Cities Service Station?

The building is a compact service station in the Art Deco style, the streamlined look that many businesses chose in the 1930s to seem modern to passing motorists. It was built for the Cities Service Company, one of the oil brands that competed for Route 66 traffic.

History of Avant's Cities Service Station

Construction was finished in 1933, only a few years after Route 66 was laid out through Oklahoma. The station's purpose was simple: keep the growing stream of automobiles on the highway moving. It earned a place on the National Register in 2004, the same year as the Jackson Conoco station nearby.

Visiting Avant's Cities Service Station: tips

The station is right on the old road, so this is a quick photo stop of 10 minutes or so. It is best combined with a short walk: the El Reno Hotel and the Jackson Conoco Service Station are practically next door, and the William I. and Magdalen M. Goff House is about 0.2 miles away. Three historic buildings and a house in a few blocks make El Reno a good leg-stretch between Oklahoma City and points west.
