- 0.5 mi from Route 66
Rising in Glendora, CA, the South Hills form a low range less than a mile from the Route 66 corridor. They rise in the San Gabriel Valley, between the big San Gabriel range and the Los Angeles Basin, reaching about 1,212 feet at the top. Much of the rock is volcanic, which explains why these hills stand out from the flat land around them, and part of them is a city park.
What is South Hills?
The hills are made largely of the Glendora Volcanics, rock left by lava that erupted here roughly 15 to 17 million years ago and then hardened. The western part lies in Glendora's South Hills Park, north of the 210 freeway.
