American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame

This hall of fame and museum in Amarillo, TX, belongs to the American Quarter Horse Association, which has its home base in the city. It honors the horses and people who did the most, year after year, to build up the breed. The museum sits about 2 miles off the old road and suits anyone with a soft spot for horses, ranch work or cowboy country.

What is American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame?

This is the association's hall of honor, set inside a museum. A place in it is not handed out lightly: it goes to horses and people who stood out over many years in a range of fields and helped the American Quarter Horse grow. Work on the museum building began in 1989.

History of American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame

The first people chosen for the AQHA honor were Bob Denhardt and Ernest Browning, in 1982. Horses joined the roll in 1989, when Leo, Three Bars, King P-234 and Wimpy P-1 became the first four to be inducted. Their names still carry weight with people who breed and ride Quarter Horses.

Visiting American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame: tips

Allow about an hour. There is parking and there are restrooms on site, the building is wheelchair accessible, and it is suitable for children. Admission is not free. The Amarillo Museum of Art is about 2 miles away, and the U.S. Route 66–Sixth Street Historic District is about 4 miles off, so the two pair well on a day in Amarillo.
