Roy T. Herman's Garage and Service Station

Roy T. Herman's old garage and filling station stands in Thoreau, NM, on the former Route 66, today signed as New Mexico State Road 122, a short distance west of an Interstate 40 exit. Built in 1935 as a Standard Oil station in Grants, it was moved here two years later to serve a newly aligned stretch of the highway. It is a small, well-traveled survivor of the era when Route 66 kept shifting.

What it is

A 1930s filling station that later became a car repair garage. It holds a National Register listing from 1993 and a place on the state's register of cultural properties.

A bit of history

The building started life in 1935 as a Standard Oil station in Grants, on Route 66. In 1937 it was moved to Thoreau, where it became the first business on a newly built alignment of the highway. It pumped fuel until 1963. Then it moved again, about 200 yards along the road, and carried on as a repair garage. Two moves in under three decades show how closely roadside businesses followed the highway.

Visiting tips

Treat it as a quick photo stop from the street, and respect the property. It is easy to reach from I-40. Campbell Pass, where the old road crosses the Continental Divide, is about 5 miles away, and Bluewater Lake State Park about 9.6 miles.
