Campbell Pass carries travellers over the Continental Divide at the town of Continental Divide, NM, in McKinley County, between Grants and Gallup. The pass is wide and gentle, and it carries a busy railroad, the path of Route 66 and today's Interstate 40. The name Campbell Pass is rarely used and turns up mostly in railroad history, so most drivers simply know it as the divide.
What is Campbell Pass?
A low, easy crossing of the Continental Divide, home to the town that takes the divide's name. The Santa Fe railroad (the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe) chose it for its original main line in 1880; that line is now BNSF's Southern Transcon. Route 66 came through in 1926, and Interstate 40 now follows it. Where the name Campbell came from is unclear.
