- Historic hotel
- In Elk City, Oklahoma
- On Route 66
- National Register of Historic Places
Rising four stories over downtown Elk City, OK, the Casa Grande Hotel opened on Route 66 in 1928, soon after the highway was designated, to house the growing number of motorists. Its Spanish Eclectic design stands out on the main street. No other high-rise hotel stands on Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, and it sits right on the old road, so it is an easy stop.
What is Casa Grande Hotel?
The hotel was the work of the architects Hawk and Parr, who chose the Spanish Eclectic style. Arched windows and doorways trimmed with carved stone give it a Southwestern look. Spanish-inspired designs like this turned up often on the western part of Route 66, a nod to the region's Spanish past.
History of Casa Grande Hotel
The hotel was built as a first-class stop for highway travelers. Grand hotels of this kind lost favor after the 1920s, and few were built along this stretch of the road. That is why the Casa Grande has no high-rise rival on the road between Oklahoma City and Amarillo. It earned a National Register listing on February 23, 1995.
Visiting Casa Grande Hotel: tips
The hotel faces Route 66 at 3rd Street, so it is a quick photo stop in the middle of town. The Hedlund Motor Company Building is about 0.2 miles away and the Storm House about 0.5 miles away, which makes a short walk possible. The Canute Service Station is about 7 miles away.
