Built in stucco on former Route 66 in Canute, OK, the Canute Service Station sits about a mile off the main route line. Its Pueblo Deco design, with a notched parapet, tile diamonds and a red tile roof, was meant to catch the eye of westbound drivers. Part roadhouse, part gas station, it went up in two stages in the late 1930s and is now listed on the National Register.
What is Canute Service Station?
The building combines two parts: a roadhouse on the west end and a service station attached to it. Both share the Pueblo Deco look, a Southwestern mix of Art Deco lines and Pueblo Revival forms that suited the country Route 66 was heading into.
The details are what make it worth a look. The walls are finished in stucco, the top edge is shaped like a castle battlement and set with tile diamonds, and the roof is covered in red tile.
History of Canute Service Station
The roadhouse section opened first, in 1936. Three years later, in 1939, the gas station was added to it, turning the building into a one-stop halt for fuel and a break.
Pueblo Deco was a popular choice in the Southwest, especially for Route 66 businesses hoping to pull in travelers bound for the West. The Canute station is a good surviving example, and it joined the National Register on February 9, 1995.
