Claremore Mound

Claremore Mound, near Tulsa, OK, is a rocky natural hill in Rogers County that rises to 784 feet above sea level beside the Verdigris River. An Osage village stood on its top in the early 1800s, and in 1817 it was the scene of a deadly Cherokee attack. It also gave the town of Claremore its name, thanks to a spelling mistake. It lies about 5 miles off the old road.

What is Claremore Mound?

The mound rises just north of the small community of Sageeyah. Its top covers roughly 25 acres, enough room for Pasona, the Osage village built there around 1802.

History of Claremore Mound

In June 1817 a Cherokee band and its allies, led by Chief Spring Frog, struck an Osage village at the base of the mound. Thirty-eight Osage died, among them Chief Glahmo, and 104 people were taken captive. The fight is remembered as the Battle of Strawberry Moon. Glahmo's son, Wah-tianka, led Osage raids against the Cherokee for two decades afterward.

French traders called Glahmo Chief Clermont, and settlers named the mound and the town Clermont after him. An 1874 post office application spelled it Claremore, and the error was never fixed.
