The Tulsa Zoo, near Tulsa, OK, covers 84 acres inside Mohawk Park, among the biggest city-owned parks in the country. The City of Tulsa owns it, and since 2010 a nonprofit company has run it. Exhibits include the Valley of the Elephant, part of the larger Lost Kingdom area. It lies about 3 miles off the old road, a good family break on a long drive through Oklahoma.
What is Tulsa Zoo?
This is a full-size zoo set in a large municipal park. Its accreditation from the AZA, the national Association of Zoos and Aquariums, runs through September 2028. One highlight is Lost Kingdom, a group of exhibits that includes the elephant enclosure.
History of Tulsa Zoo
The zoo dates to 1927. It has always belonged to the City of Tulsa, but in 2010 day-to-day management passed to Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc., which runs it as a nonprofit.
Visiting Tulsa Zoo: tips
The zoo is about 3 miles off the old road. Give it at least half a day; 84 acres is a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes help. The Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium is about 1.9 miles away, which makes an easy second stop with kids. The Outsiders House Museum is about 3.7 miles off, and the Sinclair Service Station is about 4.2 miles away.
