Coral Court Motel

The Coral Court Motel has closed and is gone: it was torn down in 1995. For more than 50 years it stood on Route 66 in Marlborough, a suburb of St. Louis, MO, and its Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design earned it a place on the National Register. A housing development now fills the site, so this is a stop for memory rather than sightseeing.

What is Coral Court Motel?

What remains today is a site, not a building. The motel was built on Route 66 in the early 1940s and designed in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles, with the smooth, rounded lines that suggested speed and modern travel. At its peak it grew to 77 rooms. Since its demolition, a subdivision called Oak Knoll Manor has occupied the land.

History of Coral Court Motel

The Coral Court opened in the early 1940s and expanded during the boom years of car travel on Route 66. Its fortunes turned when Interstate 44 bypassed this stretch of the highway in the 1970s, and business fell away. The motel had been placed on the National Register in 1989 for its architecture, but it closed for good in 1993. Local supporters campaigned hard to save it, yet it was demolished in 1995 to make way for new homes.

Visiting Coral Court Motel: tips

There is nothing of the motel left to see, and the houses on the site are private homes, so do not wander into the subdivision looking for traces. If you want to pay tribute, a slow drive along this part of Route 66 is enough. The story of the Coral Court is a reminder to visit the old road's surviving motels while they still stand.

For something to visit nearby, The Magic House, St. Louis Children's Museum, is about 3.9 miles away, the Broadway ghost town site about 4.4 miles and Seiwa-en about 4.7 miles.
