What is Wagon Wheel Motel, Café and Station?

The Wagon Wheel is an independently owned motel with 19 rooms, built in the Tudor Revival style. In 2010 every room was restored, and modern comforts such as HD televisions and wireless internet were added.

The original café building no longer serves meals. It now houses a shop selling jewelry, purses, home decor, Route 66 books and T-shirts, along with a handful of original Wagon Wheel antiques. A filling station also stood on the 1936 property, but it is no longer in use.

History of Wagon Wheel Motel, Café and Station

The site opened in 1936 as a café, and the motel followed in 1938. It has operated ever since, through the busy decades of Route 66 and the quieter years after the interstate bypassed many towns along the old road. The whole property joined the National Register in 2003, recognizing it as a surviving piece of highway lodging history.
