Munger-Moss Motel

The Munger-Moss Motel stands on the old road in Lebanon, MO, and its story reaches back to the early days of Route 66 in Missouri. The motel went up in 1946 next to a roadside cafe and a gas station, both since gone. Its roots go back to the Munger-Moss Sandwich Shop, which fed Route 66 travellers at Devil's Elbow from about 1936. Its status changes, so check before counting on a room.

History of Munger-Moss Motel

The original Munger-Moss business stood at Devil's Elbow, beside the Big Piney River, serving drivers on the old highway until 1945. That spot is now home to the Elbow Inn.

After World War II, a four-lane bypass of Route 66 built toward Fort Leonard Wood pulled traffic away from the Devil's Elbow location. So the business packed up and started again in Lebanon, where the motel was added in 1946 next to a restaurant and a gas station. Those two older buildings have since disappeared, leaving the motel as the survivor.
