Little Santa Anita Canyon cuts into the southern San Gabriel Mountains above Sierra Madre, CA, about 1.9 miles off the old road. It lies in the Angeles National Forest and runs down from Mount Wilson to the edge of town. The Mount Wilson Trail starts in Sierra Madre and follows the canyon's west side, giving Route 66 travelers a real mountain hike close to the city.
What is Little Santa Anita Canyon?
The canyon carries Little Santa Anita Creek south out of the mountains. Near the bottom, the Sierra Madre Dam holds the creek back. The canyon walls rise steadily toward Mount Wilson at the top.
Visiting Little Santa Anita Canyon: tips
The trailhead is in Sierra Madre itself. Hiking the full trail to the summit is a serious outing, so walk only as far as time and fitness allow, and carry water. For a gentler stop, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is about 2.1 miles away, and Eaton Canyon is about 3.5 miles off.
