Lyric Live Theater

The Lyric Live Theater is a small historic playhouse in Newburg, MO, right by the old road. Built in 1919, the one-story brick building served for decades as the town's movie house, lecture hall and stage. After 1955 it fell out of that role, but it has since come back to life as a venue for small stage productions. For Route 66 travellers, it is a charming slice of small-town entertainment history.

What is Lyric Live Theater?

The theater is a simple rectangle of brick with a gable roof hidden behind a stepped parapet. The front is symmetrical: a round-arched entrance sits in the middle, with windows under shallow arches on each side. The stepped parapet gives the plain brick front a touch of decoration and is the feature most visible from the street.

Over the years it has gone by several names, including Regional Opera Company, Newburg Theater, Lyric Theater and Community Theater. The building is modest in size, which suits the intimate shows it now hosts. There is wheelchair access.

History of Lyric Live Theater

The building went up in 1919. Until 1955 it did many jobs for Newburg at once, showing films, hosting lectures and staging small plays and community gatherings. That run lasted more than three decades. In more recent years it has returned to the stage, now presenting modest live productions.

It joined the National Register in 2006.

Visiting Lyric Live Theater: tips

Stop for a look at the arched front and a photo from the street. Newburg sits right by the old road, so the theater is a very short detour even if you only stop for a picture. If your schedule allows, catching a show is the best way to see the inside. The ghost towns of Arlington and Westcott are about 3.8 and 4 miles away, and Vessie about 6 miles off, so it fits into a slow drive along this stretch of the old road.
