Vessie is an extinct town near Rolla, MO, in northern Phelps County, set inside the Mark Twain National Forest. It sat on a ridge at about 1,060 feet, between Little Piney Creek on its east side and Kaintuck Hollow on its west. The spot is where Missouri Route T meets a county road, about 4 miles south of Newburg and about 6 miles off Route 66.
What is Vessie?
Vessie was a small post-office community in the eastern part of Liberty Township. The name seems to have been picked because it was brief and unlike any other. Today the site is forest ridge country rather than a town.
Visiting Vessie: tips
Plan it as a scenic national-forest drive, not a sightseeing stop. Stay on public roads. The Gourd Creek Cave site is about 2 miles away, the Lyric Live Theater about 6, and Clementine under 8.
