Main and Eighth Streets Historic District

This historic district at Main and Eighth streets groups 20 historic buildings around a downtown corner of Joplin, MO. Most went up from around 1891 to 1929, and a striking number of them began life as hotels. The block lies close to the Route 66 corridor and a few minutes' walk from Route 66 Park, so it is easy to fold into a stroll through the center of town.

What it is

The buildings carry Renaissance Revival and Colonial Revival detailing. Names to look for include the Muir Block of 1891, Hotel Blende and the Stevens Hotel, both from 1899, the Willard Hotel from about 1901, and the Marquette Hotel from about 1916. The Stevens Hotel is also known as the Scottish Rite Temple, a sign of how some of these buildings changed roles over time.

A bit of history

Before the district existed, one building inside it already had its own listing: the Rains Brothers Building. The full district was added to the National Register in 2011, recognizing nearly four decades of growth on this corner.

Visiting tips

This is a street-side stop. Walk the corner, look up at the upper floors where hotel guests once stayed, and allow 15 to 20 minutes. Route 66 Park is about 0.2 mile away and the Newman Brothers Building about 0.3 mile, so the corner fits neatly into a downtown walk. The Rains Brothers Building site is only about 0.1 mile off.
