Murphysburg Historic District

Murphysburg Historic District is a mostly residential neighborhood in Joplin, MO, with 185 buildings that add to its historic character. Houses and churches here went up from around 1880 to 1965, and together they show off a long list of styles, from Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque to Tudor Revival. It sits a few blocks from downtown and close to the Route 66 corridor, so it suits a slow drive or an evening walk.

What is Murphysburg Historic District?

Think of it as a walkable catalog of American house design. Along its streets stand Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival houses, Mission Revival and Classical Revival designs, heavy Richardsonian Romanesque stonework and fanciful Queen Anne homes. Most are private homes, with churches and apartment buildings mixed in among them.

Two buildings in the neighborhood were listed on their own before the district was drawn: the Olivia Apartments and the Ridgway Apartments.

History of Murphysburg Historic District

The neighborhood filled in over about 85 years, starting around 1880. Among the houses singled out in its listing are the H. Edward Dangerfield House of 1895, the John Wise House of 1898, the J.H. Brand House of 1899, the A.B. McConnell House from about the same year, and the H.H. McNeal House of 1908.

Two churches also stand out: First Methodist Church, built in 1905, and the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, from around 1907. The whole district was added to the National Register in 2015.

These are homes where people live, so enjoy them from the street and the public sidewalk and respect private property. A slow loop on foot or by car takes 30 to 45 minutes. The Ridgway Apartments are about 0.3 mile away, and the Fifth and Main Historic District is about 0.2 mile off, which makes it easy to pair these residential streets with the downtown storefronts. The Joplin Downtown Historic District is about 0.3 mile away as well.
