Myron and Sonya Glassberg Family Conservation Area

Named for the family whose gift helped buy it, the Glassberg Family Conservation Area covers 429 acres of wooded hills in Eureka, MO, in northwest Jefferson County. It was bought to protect LaBarque Creek, one of the cleanest streams around St. Louis, and opened to visitors in December 2012. A loop trail, a small fishing lake and an overlook above the Meramec River make it a good leg-stretcher about 3 miles off the old road.

What it is

Most of the land drains into LaBarque Creek, which feeds the Meramec River. The main trail is a 3-mile loop through the woods, and a shorter half-mile path circles Buder Lake, a 3-acre pond where fishing is allowed. Five more ponds dot the property, though none of them hold fish.

The highlight for many walkers is a lookout high above the Meramec, where the river valley opens up below. Near the parking area stands a limestone monument by the artist Gail Cassilly, dedicated to the Glassberg family.

A bit of history

The purchase came together through a gift from Myron and Sonya Glassberg's family, combined with the Forest Legacy Program, which the U.S. Forest Service runs. The goal was clean water. LaBarque Creek ranks among the best streams in the St. Louis region and supports 42 or more kinds of fish, and the land was bought to help keep that water clean.

The area welcomed its first visitors in December 2012, making it one of the newer protected places in this corner of Missouri.

Visiting tips

This is a foot-traffic-only place: horses, bicycles, motor vehicles and camping are not permitted. The site reports it is not wheelchair accessible, but it is a fine outing for families who can manage a woodland trail. Allow two hours for the loop and the overlook.

Other protected land lies close by. Young Conservation Area is about 1.4 miles away, LaBarque Creek Conservation Area about 1.7 miles, and Allenton Access about 2.7 miles.
