Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame

Oklahoma's Jazz Hall of Fame, in Tulsa, OK, is a nonprofit that celebrates the state's jazz, blues and gospel musicians. It occupies Tulsa's old Union Depot, renamed the Jazz Depot, and works both as a museum and as a place to hear live music. For a Route 66 traveler it is a short, easy stop right in downtown Tulsa, with a second music museum just around the corner.

What is Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame?

The hall does two jobs under one roof. As a museum, it shows photographs, life stories, personal items and memorabilia tied to musicians from the state. Names on display include Jimmy Rushing, Charlie Christian, Chet Baker, Barney Kessel, Don Cherry, Earl Bostic, Pat Kelley and Tommy Crook.

As a venue, it puts on jazz performances on a regular basis, so the old railroad station still fills with people and sound. The building itself is part of the appeal: a former passenger depot given a second life as a home for music history.

Visiting Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame: tips

Allow about an hour for the exhibits, longer if a show is on. Performance nights change, so check the schedule if you hope to catch live music.

The Woody Guthrie Center is only about 0.2 miles away, which makes it simple to pair the two on foot. The Outsiders House Museum is about 1.3 miles off, and the Cities Service Station No. 8, a 1940 filling station, is about 1.6 miles away.
