The Outsiders House Museum
The Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, OK, is the small house that stood in for the Curtis brothers' home in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film The Outsiders, adapted from S. E. Hinton's 1967 novel. A devoted fan bought it, restored it to match what audiences saw on screen and opened it to visitors in 2019. It sits close to the Route 66 corridor, an easy detour for movie and book fans passing through the city.
What is The Outsiders House Museum?
The museum is one ordinary house, thought to date from about 1920, that became the main filming location for the home of the Curtis brothers, the lead characters of the story. Apart from the weeks of the shoot, it spent its life as a private home. Today the rooms are arranged so fans can step into the setting they remember from the movie.
The project reaches a little beyond the front door. Two plaques honor the partnership between the director and the author, and restoration work has also covered the old DX gas station that appears in the film. That station no longer sells fuel, but it adds a second film location to look at.
History of The Outsiders House Museum
Hinton's book came out in 1967, and Coppola shot his version in Tulsa around 1982. The film reached theaters in 1983, and its young cast later became major stars, which is one reason the movie still has a loyal following.
Danny Boy O'Connor, a hip-hop performer and longtime admirer of the story, found the house again in 2009 during a three-day tour stop in Tulsa. He kept coming back, bought it in 2016 and led a long renovation meant to make it look as it did in the film. The museum welcomed its first visitors on August 9, 2019.
Visiting The Outsiders House Museum: tips
Plan on about an hour. It is not free to visit, and the schedule is limited, so check before you go. Restrooms are on site, parking is available, the house is listed as wheelchair accessible and it is considered kid-friendly.
Two music museums make good company for the afternoon: the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and the Woody Guthrie Center are each about 1.3 miles away. The Sinclair Service Station, an old filling station, is about 2.2 miles off.
