Gilcrease Museum

Gilcrease Museum, in Tulsa, OK, is known for one of the biggest and broadest collections of American West art anywhere, along with a growing set of Central and South American art and artifacts. It carries the name of Thomas Gilcrease, a Muscogee Creek oilman who founded it and gave it to the city. It lies about 2 miles off the old road, northwest of downtown, and suits travelers who love Western art and history.

Records give 1943 as the museum's founding year. Thomas Gilcrease, the oilman behind it, handed the collection, the building and the land over to Tulsa's city government in 1958. Starting July 1, 2008, the city and the University of Tulsa have run it together in a public-private partnership. The research wing was added in 2014.
