Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound

The Maloof Compound, named for Sam and Alfreda Maloof, in Alta Loma, CA, is the home and workshop of Sam Maloof, a designer and maker of wooden furniture, about 2.6 miles off the old road. Maloof designed the buildings himself and slowly filled them with his own handmade doors, windows and fittings. Today the compound serves as a museum devoted to Arts and Crafts work and holds a National Register listing, a fine stop for anyone who loves craftsmanship.

What is Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound?

The compound is a group of buildings: the house where Maloof lived and the workshop and display room where he built and showed his furniture. Over the years he replaced ready-made parts of the house with pieces he carved himself, including redwood doors and windows.

His touch reaches into small details too. Door handles, door surrounds, rafters and even the toilet seats were swapped for his own designs, so the house itself works as a catalog of his craft. There are restrooms on site.

History of Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound

Maloof enjoyed his most successful years during the 1960s and 1970s, when he was living and working here. In the early 2000s the house had to be moved to make way for California State Route 210, which was being built through the area. After the move, the property opened as a museum dedicated to Arts and Crafts work. National Register listing followed on November 9, 2010, recognizing both the buildings and the life's work they hold.

Visiting Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound: tips
