Uptown Cuba Historic District, Missouri

The Uptown Cuba Historic District covers the old business center of Cuba, MO, right beside the old road. Nineteen historic buildings make up the district, put up over roughly eight decades starting around 1880. For Route 66 travellers, it is the heart of a small Missouri town and a good place to see how a main street grew over the decades.

What is Uptown Cuba Historic District?

The district takes in the commercial core of Cuba, with buildings that went up between about 1880 and 1963. Several are good examples of the Italianate style.

A few landmarks stand out. Kinder's Big Store dates from about 1885, the Bank of Cuba from about 1896 and the Hotel Grand from 1897. The old City Hall and Fire Department building went up in 1934, during the early Route 66 years. The district joined the National Register in 2013.

Visiting Uptown Cuba Historic District: tips

Allow half an hour to stroll and look at the storefronts. There is wheelchair access. Several other listed buildings are within a block or two: the John Manson Munro House, Cuba Lodge No. 312 A.F. and A.M. and the Cuba City Jail are each about 0.1 miles away. Fuel and food are close by, and the Wagon Wheel motel is about 0.6 miles off for an overnight stay.
