Wallace House

The Wallace House is a historic two-story home in Lebanon, MO, a short hop from Route 66. Built in 1876 and 1877, it shows off the Stick style and the Eastlake look, both known for decorative woodwork. Ornamented gables, a bay window at one corner and a porch with cut-out brackets give it character. The house was added to the National Register in 1984, and it pairs neatly with a second historic home next door.

What is Wallace House?

This is a wood-frame house, two stories tall, dressed in plenty of decorative trim. The gables carry decoration, a bay window pushes out from one corner, and the original porch rests on squared columns with brackets cut into shapes.

Around 1909 the owners enlarged the front porch and added a porte cochere, a covered drive-through entrance where carriages, and later cars, could pull up out of the rain. Those additions let you see two eras in one building: the 1870s house and the updates made about thirty years later. It is the kind of house that rewards a slow look at the details.

History of Wallace House

Construction ran from 1876 into 1877, so the house is roughly a century and a half old. Its design mixes Stick style framing with Eastlake movement ornament. In 1984 it was recognized with a National Register listing.

Visiting Wallace House: tips

The house is only a couple of blocks off the old road through Lebanon. Parking and restrooms are on site, and it is listed as wheelchair accessible. The facts here do not say whether the rooms are open for tours, so plan to enjoy it from outside unless you confirm otherwise, and respect the property.

The Ploger-Moneymaker Place stands just 0.1 mile away, so you can see both old houses in one short walk. The Joe Knight Building is under half a mile off, and the Munger-Moss Motel is about 1.3 miles. Allow 15 to 20 minutes here.
