American Museum of Ceramic Art

AMOCA (American Museum of Ceramic Art) is a nonprofit museum in Pomona, CA, about 3 miles off the old road. It opened in 2003 and is devoted to a single medium: clay. Visitors see pieces drawn from a permanent collection of around 10,000 objects, alongside temporary shows that change through the year. For Route 66 travelers heading into Los Angeles, it is an easy cultural stop in a compact downtown with other historic sites close by.

What is American Museum of Ceramic Art?

The museum focuses on ceramics and nothing else. Its displays mix historic and contemporary work, so a single visit can move from older pottery traditions to pieces by artists working today. Much of what is on view comes from the permanent collection, which numbers roughly 10,000 objects, while rotating exhibitions keep the galleries changing from one season to the next. It has operated as a nonprofit since its founding in 2003.

Visiting American Museum of Ceramic Art: tips

Pomona sits about 3 miles off the old road, so plan this as a short detour rather than a drive-by. Allow about an hour for the galleries. The museum has restrooms, wheelchair access and parking on site, and it works well for a family stop with children.

Two more historic places are within easy reach. The Pomona Fox Theater, a restored movie palace, is about 0.3 miles away, and the 1909 Pomona City Stables are about half a mile off. The Lincoln Park Historic District is roughly 0.7 miles from the museum if there is time for one more stop.
