Ygnacio Palomares Adobe

The Ygnacio Palomares Adobe is a one-story adobe house in Pomona, CA, about a mile off the old road. Built in the early 1850s for Don Ygnacio Palomares, it fell into ruin and was later restored and opened as a museum about rancho life under Spain and Mexico. It is a California Historical Landmark and one of the earliest National Register listings in Los Angeles County.

What is Ygnacio Palomares Adobe?

The house is built of adobe brick and stands a single story tall. It served as the residence of Don Ygnacio Palomares, and today it shows how families lived during the Spanish and Mexican rancho period.

The site is sometimes called the Adobe de Palomares.

History of Ygnacio Palomares Adobe

Construction took place between 1850 and 1855. By the 1880s the house had been abandoned, and it sat open to wind and rain for decades. The City of Pomona took ownership in the 1930s, and in 1939 the Works Project Administration, the city and the Pomona Valley historical society restored it together.

It has welcomed the public as a museum since 1940. It earned a National Register of Historic Places listing in 1971. Los Angeles County now has more than 400 Register listings, and fewer than ten of them came before this one, a sign of how early its value was recognized.

Visiting Ygnacio Palomares Adobe: tips

Allow about 45 minutes. The adobe walls and simple one-story plan are worth a close look, a reminder of what stood in this valley long before Route 66 was paved. The site is listed as wheelchair accessible and works well for families with children, who can see how a household lived during the rancho years.

Pomona has several other stops close together. La Casa Alvarado, another historic house, is about 1.3 miles away, the Lincoln Park Historic District is about 1.4 miles off, and the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is about 1.5 miles away.
