The Berleman House on South Main Street in Edwardsville, IL, is a one-story brick home built between 1864 and 1868. Architect Charles Spillman gave it Greek Revival details, including a pediment over the front door. A carpenter named C. Herman Berleman bought it in 1868, and his family stayed until 1962. It is listed on the National Register and sits less than a mile off the old road, close to several other historic buildings.
What is Berleman House?
The house is modest in size but rich in detail. A gable roof tops the single story of brick. At the entrance, a pediment rests on flat Doric pilasters, and slimmer pillars frame a recessed door with sidelights on either side and a transom window above. A frame addition extends from the back.
History of Berleman House
Samual Morrison built the house between 1864 and 1868 to a design by Charles Spillman. In 1868 it was bought by C. Herman Berleman, a carpenter, and the Berleman family lived here for nearly a century, until 1962. In 1895 Berleman added the wooden rear section. The house was listed on the National Register on March 27, 1980.
