St. Louis Street Historic District

In Edwardsville, IL, a stretch of St. Louis Street spanning several blocks forms a historic district of 59 homes, most from the late 1800s. Back then it ranked among the most sought-after addresses in town, home to many of its wealthiest families. Queen Anne houses lead, with other styles of the era mixed in. It sits less than a mile off the old road.

What is St. Louis Street Historic District?

Of the 59 houses, 51 add to the historic character. Queen Anne houses are the most common, but you will also spot Italianate, Chateauesque and Classical Revival homes.

The two sides of the street differ. Houses on the south side sit on big lots with open, park-like space between them, while those on the north side stand closer together.

History of St. Louis Street Historic District

John Lusk built the first house here, a log cabin, in 1809. In the 1870s leading Edwardsville residents began putting up homes along the south side on generous plots. Judge Joseph Gillespie carved the north side into lots in 1883 and sold them, which is why the houses there are nearer to one another. The district joined the National Register on May 9, 1983.
