Black Mesa

Black Mesa is the far southern end of the Black Mountains near Oatman, AZ, about 5.9 miles off the old road. The mesa runs roughly 10 miles north to south and stands around 1,000 feet above the valleys around it. The whole mesa lies inside the Warm Springs Wilderness, so it is a place to admire from a distance while driving between Oatman and the interstate.

What is Black Mesa?

The mesa forms the southern tip of the Black Mountains range. A canyon and road separate it from the Black Hills to the north, and the Mount Nutt Wilderness sits just across that canyon. Interstate 40 runs through the valleys to its east and south, and the small town of Yucca lies just to the east.

Visiting Black Mesa: tips

There are no facilities; this is protected wilderness. Boundary Cone is about 5.5 miles away, and Oatman and the Durlin Hotel are about 6 miles off. Carry water and plan on a scenic view rather than a stop.
