Brown Mug Cafe

Brown Mug Cafe is a small, family-run cafe in Winslow, AZ, serving Mexican and American food on Second Street, the street that carried Route 66 through downtown. It has been serving since 1958, and the family recipes for tacos, enchiladas, burros, Navajo tacos and sopapillas have passed from mother to daughter. The same stretch of Second Street runs past Standin' on the Corner Park and La Posada.

What is Brown Mug Cafe?

A single-story stucco and brick cafe with a large painted sign on its roof and a vintage vertical neon "CAFE" sign out front. The vertical neon sign shows in photos taken in 2009 and in 2026. The menu mixes Mexican and American dishes.

History of Brown Mug Cafe

The cafe has been serving since 1958. Lucy Ono ran it through its early decades, and her daughter, Josephine Perez, later took it over and kept her mother's recipes on the menu.

Second Street carried US 66 through downtown Winslow. Later the highway split into a one-way pair, with eastbound traffic on 2nd Street and westbound traffic on 3rd Street.

Visiting Brown Mug Cafe: tips

The cafe sits right on Second Street, the old Route 66, in downtown Winslow, so it pairs easily with a stop at Standin' on the Corner Park and a look at La Posada on the same street. On the one-way pair through town, Second Street carries the eastbound traffic.
