The Tiny Church of the Mother Road is a very small wooden chapel in the Skylark Courtyard on East 2nd Street in Winslow, AZ, on the town's stretch of Route 66. It is about 7 feet by 4.5 feet, with two benches and an altar, so it holds roughly two people and a minister. Visitors say it was built in 2012 from the lumber of the old Skylark Bar. It is easy to miss.

What is Tiny Church of the Mother Road?

A chapel just big enough for a wedding of two. A sign calls it the world's smallest church, a title other chapels in the country also claim, so it is safest described as the smallest on Route 66.

History of Tiny Church of the Mother Road

According to visitor reports and a photo description, it went up in 2012 from lumber of the bar that once stood on the site, with a window from an old Winslow church. One report says a family built it in memory of a longtime Route 66 businessman, a detail that rests on a single source.

Visiting Tiny Church of the Mother Road: tips

It stands half a block from Standin' on the Corner Park, in the Skylark Courtyard. The chapel is always open, says the Winslow Chamber of Commerce: the courtyard gates are opened early in the day and closed at night, so come in daylight. It is a quick look rather than a destination.
